The hefty step-down transformer is delivered to the NW Handling Systems warehouse. It's a 30kVa unit needed to convert 480V - 3 phase down to 240V - 3 phase. To get enough power to charge four Teslas, we needed to use two of the shop's 30 amp L-16 30 type twist lock wall sockets to get 60 amps input power. Each are protected by circuit breakers at the wall panel. NEDRA president Mike Wilmon wastes no time taking it apart!

At the transformer's left side you can see the big 3 phase 120 amp circuit breaker fed off its thick 240V secondary windings. This gave 3, 240V single phase outputs. Next to it is a single 40 amp breaker for a 4th 240V single phase output. At the right side are a pair of 40 amp breakers we rewired to bring in the 3 phase 480V from the twist lock 3 phase 30 amp wall sockets (normally used for forklift chargers).

Each of the 4, 240V outputs would need to be terminated in NEMA 1450 outlets. The four outlets were prepared for the four pigtails that need to be assembled.

Here's the completed setup. Note the blue squirrel cage fan we used to blow cold air into the floor level air slot of the normally convection-cooled transformer assembly. The two larger 'Tesla' charge cord devices are the stock 30 amp factory items, where the two smaller units are 40 amp custom made devices by 'EV Components'

Blue Meanie was driven the 5 mile distance from the Wayland EV Juice Bar to the NW Handling Systems forklift shop at freeway speeds to pull down its pack some, to test the charging setup. The transformer didn't seem to care that we delvered 27.5 amps @ 180V into the Meanie's pack!

The Teslas arrived after their near-200 mile drive to Portland. With all four pulling BIG amps, the transformer setup worked flawlessly.
